Why I Chose Marketing and What I’ve Learned as a Freshman at IUP
Marketing is a dynamic and rewarding field that combines creativity, strategy, and communication. As a freshman at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) pursuing a Marketing degree, I’ve begun to uncover the versatility of this field and the many opportunities it offers. Before declaring my major, I had a general understanding of marketing as a career focused on understanding audiences and creating campaigns to connect with them. However, my studies have deepened my appreciation for the industry and introduced me to new perspectives and challenges.
One of the most exciting aspects of marketing is its ever-evolving nature. It’s a field that requires adaptability and a willingness to learn, especially with the rise of digital platforms and technologies. I’ve discovered opportunities within the program that will help me stay competitive, such as the digital marketing certification offered at IUP. This certification allows students to gain hands-on experience with tools like Google Ads and HubSpot, which are critical in today’s job market. Learning about this opportunity has motivated me to explore how certifications and additional training can enhance my career prospects.
Additionally, I’ve learned about the vital role marketing plays in promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Target audience research and demographic marketing are essential practices in the field, but they also come with significant responsibility. My coursework has shown me how to approach these areas ethically, ensuring that campaigns are inclusive, authentic, and free of harmful stereotypes. Practicing DEI in marketing not only fosters trust and connection with diverse audiences but also reflects the values of equity and respect that are essential for long-term success.
Marketing is not just about selling a product; it’s about building meaningful relationships and delivering value to people. My experiences so far have inspired me to think critically about how I can create campaigns that resonate with diverse audiences while maintaining ethical practices. I look forward to continuing my studies, gaining certifications, and exploring the many ways marketing can make an impact.
For anyone considering marketing as a major, my advice is to embrace the opportunities to learn and grow. This field is full of potential, and with the right mindset and skills, it can lead to a fulfilling and impactful career.
